  • Seattle Taxes Amazon And Starbucks Millions For Homeless Housing, They Fight Back! (REACTION)

Seattle leaders on Monday unanimously approved a tax on large businesses such as Amazon and Starbucks to fund the fight against homelessness after weeks of heated debate and raucous hearings. The City Council backed a compromise plan that will charge large businesses about $275 per full-time worker each year, lower than the $500 per worker initially proposed. The so-called head tax would raise about $48 million a year to pay for affordable housing and homeless services. The debate over who should pay to solve a housing crisis exacerbated by Seattle's rapid economic growth comes amid skyrocketing housing prices and rising homelessness. The Seattle region had the third-highest number of homeless people in the U.S. and saw 169 homeless deaths last year. Council members who sponsored the in...

Seattle’s city council passed a new tax Monday. It will charge big companies $275 for every employee. The “head” tax is supposed to fund housing for the homeless. Supporters of the tax chanted “housing is a human right!” at a protest lead by City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, a member of the “Socialist Alternative” party. --------- Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel --------- Seattle homelessness has doubled in the last 8 years. Politicians blame a shortage of “affordable” housing, but John Stossel says that the politicians own bad policies helped create that shortage. Seattle’s building code is 745 pages long. (link: http://www.seattle.gov/dpd/codesrules/codes/building/default.htm) “Welded splices shall be of ASTM A706 steel,” the code notes, in an endless list of rules. The residential building code is another 685 pages. Developers can’t build big apartment buildings because in most of Seattle’s residential land area, high-rises are illegal; zoning rules say only single family houses may be built. If Seattle just repealed many of those regulations, affordable housing would grow, Stossel says. Instead, Seattle’s politicians will tax big tax companies and use the money to buy housing for homeless people. That upset Amazon, Seattle’s largest employer. It paused construction of a new office building in Seattle. Construction workers went into the streets to back Amazon, and counter-protest the socialist councilwoman’s pro-tax rally. Supporters of big government aren’t used to protesters drowning them out. Sawant accused Amazon of “extortion” and slammed Amazon owner Jeff Bezos on TV: “He said he has so much money that he doesn’t know what to do with it ... I want your viewers to understand who’s the enemy here.” The “enemy”? Stossel says: Give me a break! Bezos created the jobs that she now wants to tax. This week, Amazon partly won its fight; Seattle’s city council approved a $275 per employee tax instead of the $540 that Sawant and the other leftists proposed. Sawant accused Seattle’s Mayor of “dramatically weakening [the] Tax Amazon bill. Grim reminder: working people can't rely on corporate politicians.” Corporate politicians? Stossel points out that the $275/head tax will hurt job creation too. No wonder Amazon is looking to build its next headquarters outside of Seattle.

The City of Seattle can’t handle any more cars than we currently have. Our mode split needs to go from 30% single occupancy vehicle to 25%, and the lions share of that is going to be carried on the bus.” -Scott Kubly, Director, Seattle Department of Transportation Seattle, one of the fastest growing cities in America, is making bold investments to ensure the majority of its residents live within walking distance of frequent transit. The city’s efforts are paying off – both bus and rail ridership have seen huge gains in recent years, and 70% of trips to downtown Seattle are now made by people outside of private vehicles. And as a measure of confidence, Seattle voters approved the $900 million Move Seattle transportation levy in 2015 and followed up by supporting the regional Sound Transit 3, a $50 billion rail expansion in 2016. Seattle is demonstrating how rail and buses can work in tandem to build a fast, frequent and reliable network that encourages people to use transit. A key factor for this success is city government playing an active role forging transit improvements, not taking a back seat to county and regional transit agencies. Seattle’s experience demonstrates that when agencies create clear transportation priorities, provide thoughtful, goal-oriented planning and deliver good transit service, ridership goes up and a firm foundation of public support can be established.

Is there a higher degree of transparency because public agencies are subject to public records? Chris Mitchell responds to audience questions at a Seattle Town Hall Meeting October, 2014. Is this something that could increase the market for a municipal network because it's less likely to be surveilled?

Dr. Ron Paul in a speech given to a large group of supporters in Seattle WA a day before the WA State caucus on the role of government. With "Super Tuesday caucus"s in the states of Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio,Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Alaska. He has been picking up more delegates then Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich. He is closing in on Mitt Romney. The focus is on the Economy, but there is a lot more to it than that. The roll of government in our lives should be a big issue, but only Dr. Paul is focusing on all aspects of our civil rights.

StandUP-America demands that the City stops abusing the people and start standing up for them! They are willing to risk the city's credit AND the people's general fund to build a new arena... instead of using the credit and money for other human service needs! We the people are only cows to the aristocrats- something for them to use as they wish--- meat, milk, bones = labor, taxes, social security... all used to help prop up the wealthy, corporate leaders that control our government! Council members who sponsored the initial proposal said $48 million annually wasn't enough to address the city's urgent housing needs but conceded they couldn't get the six votes needed for a larger tax and to override a potential veto by the mayor, who favored a smaller tax and faced intense pressure from businesses. Amazon raised the stakes this month when it halted construction planning on a 17-story tower near its hometown headquarters as it awaited a vote. It also was rethinking filling office space in another leased building. The two office spaces would accommodate about 7,000 new Amazon jobs. Amazon vice president Drew Herdener said in an emailed statement that the company was disappointed by the council's decision to introduce "a tax on jobs."
